This classic Dutch onion bread is a soft yeast bread with a sautéed onion and cheese topping. The dough has a mild sweetness, while the onions and cheese bake on top until lightly golden. And no need for any special bread-making equipment.

Serve warm or at room temperature, sliced thick or thin. This bread is delicious with soup, salad, eggs, or as part of a simple lunch spread. It also works as a savory breakfast bread or afternoon snack.

How to Make Dutch Onion Bread

The dough is mixed with warm milk, yeast, butter, sugar, flour, and salt, then kneaded briefly until smooth. After the first rise, the dough is rolled into an oval and placed on a baking tray.

The onions are cooked separately until soft and spread over the dough, followed by grated aged cheese. After a short second rise, the bread is baked until the dough is cooked through, and the topping is lightly golden. You can keep the topping simple or adjust the onion-to-cheese ratio to taste.

  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of salt
