How to Make Cheesy Puff Pastry Stars
Start by cutting small stars from puff pastry using a star-shaped cookie cutter. Brush the pastry with beaten egg, then add grated cheese and black and white sesame seeds before baking until puffed and golden.
You can use different types of cheese depending on what you have available. Cheddar, Gouda, or Parmesan would all work, cheeses that melt well are best.

Puff Pastry Cheese Stars
These little puff pastry stars are an easy savory appetizer perfect for the holidays. Made with just a handful of ingredients, they’re crisp, cheesy, and topped with black and white sesame seeds for a festive finish.
Makes about 25–30 stars (depending on the size of your cookie cutter).
Ingredients
- 1 sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry
- 1 egg
- 1.5 oz grated cheese
- 1 tsp white sesame seeds
- 1 tsp black sesame seeds
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Unroll the puff pastry and use a small star-shaped cookie cutter to cut out as many stars as possible.
-
Place the stars on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
-
Beat the egg and lightly brush each pastry star with the beaten egg.
-
Sprinkle each star with a little grated cheese, followed by a small pinch of black and white sesame seeds.
-
Bake for about 10 minutes, or until the stars are puffed and golden brown.
-
Let the stars cool for a few minutes on the baking sheet before serving. They will become crispier as they cool.
Notes
These are best eaten fresh, when the pastry is at its crispest. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day, or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To crisp them up again, reheat in a 350°F oven for 5-7 minutes. An air fryer also works well at about 350°F for 2-4 minutes.
