Rose syrup (Sirup Mawar) makes vibrant pink-colored drinks with a sweet floral flavor. It is a key ingredient in Indonesian recipes like stroop soesoe and es shanghai. The aromatic sweetness pairs perfectly with coconut milk and tropical fruits, creating refreshing and delightful treats.
This simple syrup combines water and sugar with a delicate flavor of roses. Besides pretty pink drinks, it can be used in desserts, ice cream, cakes, yogurt, and cocktails.

How to Make Rose Water
Rose water is known for its subtle floral aroma and flavor. You can find it at Asian grocery stores, natural food stores, or purchase it online. Make sure to select food-grade rose water, as some varieties are intended for cosmetic use.
Though similar in flavor, rose water and rose syrup are not the same. Rose syrup includes sugar, while rose water only contains water and roses. Rose water is also different from rose essence, which is more concentrated and often artificial. I prefer to use rose water for its natural flavor.
Rose water adds a distinctive flavor and aroma to a recipe, but it can become overwhelming if used too much. Add it gradually and taste it to achieve the right amount of rosiness. To get that vivid pink color, you can add a drop or two of red food coloring.
