This homemade applesauce is a simple stovetop recipe made with apples, water, sugar, and a little cinnamon. It cooks down into a soft, spoonable sauce with a clean apple flavor that’s hard to beat. It’s quick, easy, and so much better than store-bought!

How to Make Homemade Applesauce

This easy stovetop applesauce is made with just a few ingredients and
comes together quickly. You can keep it chunky or smooth, sweeten it to
taste, and serve it warm or cold.

The applesauce fits vegetarian, vegan, dairy-free, and gluten-free diets.

Ingredients

  • 4 apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • ¾ cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Place the chopped apples and water in a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, then reduce heat and cook for 10–15 minutes, until the apples are soft.
  3. Stir in the sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Mash the apples with a fork or potato masher, or blend until smooth if preferred.
  5. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed. Serve warm or let cool before storing.

Notes

Store leftover applesauce in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 4 days. It can also be frozen for up to 3 months; let it cool fully before freezing. Thaw in the fridge and stir well before serving. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave.
