In our family, this lemonade has become our Easter brunch tradition, even though it started by chance. I made homemade blueberry lemonade one year when my son was very young, and ever since then, he’s decided it’s just part of Easter lunch. So now, every Easter, we enjoy this simple, refreshing drink together.

How Is Blueberry Lemonade Made?

Got some fresh blueberries? You really don’t need a lot more.

The blueberries are simmered with sugar and water to create a sweet simple syrup. This syrup is then mixed with fresh lemon juice and sparkling water to create the lemonade. It’s easy to make and comes together quickly.

Customization Options

  • Sweeten it with honey or agave syrup instead of sugar for a natural sweetener option.
  • Add a handful of crushed mint or basil leaves to the blueberry syrup for a hint of herbaceous flavor.
  • Substitute sparkling water with still water if you prefer a flat drink.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 2/3 cup lemon juice
  • 6 cups sparkling water or club soda

Instructions

    1. In a saucepan, combine fresh blueberries, sugar, and water. Place over low heat
    2. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Stir occasionally, letting the sugar dissolve and the blueberries start to burst.
    3. Remove from heat. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large pitcher. Use the back of a spoon to press out all the liquid. Discard the leftover blueberry pulp.
    4. Add lemon juice to the syrup, stir well, and let it cool to room temperature.
    5. Pour in sparkling water and stir to combine.
    6. Taste and adjust for sweetness or tartness as needed.
    7. Chill overnight in the refrigerator, or serve immediately over ice.

    Notes

Store any leftover blueberry syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. If the lemonade is already mixed, it’s best consumed within 2-3 days.
